Artist Statement

My work spans both contemporary and classical themes and primarily explores relationships between space, color, light, and shadow. With influences ranging from Vincent van Gogh to Frida Kahlo, the subjects of my work are wide-ranging. The media for most of my work are pencil, charcoal, acrylic, digital art, and digital photography. However, I occasionally work with new media. In addition to trying to capture the nuances of form and perspective, in my work with pencil, charcoal, acrylic, and to some extent digital photography, a primary focus is on the interplay between light and shadow. With my digital photography, in particular, there is an additional focus on capturing beautiful images from specific points of view. Most of my digital art is focused on creating ‘fun’ images with expressive faces. Since I was a small child, I have been fascinated by the ability of images to convey emotions. Once I started drawing, my focus moved from replicating faces to trying to capture the mood of images more precisely using color and perspective. As space, color, light, and darkness combine to form images, the viewer’s experience is not only visual but emotional as well.
